ROS will be a drive-kick team under new coach

JAMES Yap

By WAYLON GALVEZ

Two-time Most Valuable Player (MVP) James Yap of Rain or Shine said newly-appointed coach Chris Gavina introduced plays on the first day he handled the team practice Tuesday at the Reyes Gym in Mandaluyong City.

And things look good – at least for him.

During the practice, Yap said the young mentor asked him to always be ready and stay healthy.

That’s because under Gavina’s system, Yap and the rest of the shooters of the team will be playing key roles.

The coaching philosophy of Gavina, according to Yap, is constructed on drive and kick, which basically means whoever has the ball creates scoring opportunities for others by going to the hoop and passing it to an open teammate.

With former coach Caloy Garcia – now a consultant – the system was more on handoff, which allows the player with the leather to give it to a teammate and set a screen for a chance to score.

Yap said Gavina might use both systems in the coming PBA Philippine Cup.

Gavina has already proved his worth before as a PBA active consultant during his stint with Terrafirma (formerly Kia/Mahindra), a team he steered to its first and so far only quarterfinal playoff stint during the 2016 Governors’ Cup.

“As a professional player we need to adapt and focus,” said Yap. \”:0}}],\”show-by-default\”:true,\”show\”:\”Default\”},{\”title\”:\”iPhone 6 Plus\”,\”type\”:\”phone\”,\”user-agent\”:\”Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 9_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/601.1.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/9.0 Mobile/13B143 Safari/601.1\”,\”capabilities\”:[\”touch\”,\”mobile\”],\”screen\”:{\”device-pixel-ratio\”:3,\”vertical\”:{\”width\”:414,\”height\”:736},\”horizontal\”:{\”width\”:736,\”height\”:414}},\”modes\”:[{\”title\”:\”default\”,\”orientation\”:\”vertical\”,\”insets\”:{\”left\”:0,\”top\”:0,\”right\”:0,\”bottom\”:0}},{\”title\”:\”default\”,\”orientation\”:\”horizontal\”,\”insets\”:{\”left\”:0,\”top\”:0,\”right\”:0,\”bottom\”:0}}],\”show-by-default\”:true,\”show\”:\”Default\”},{\”title\”:\”iPad\”,\”type\”:\”tablet\”,\”user-agent\”:\”Mozilla/5.0 (iPad; CPU OS 9_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/601.1.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/9.0 Mobile/13B143 Safari/601.1\”,\”capabilities\”:[\”touch\”,\”mobile\”],\”screen\”:{\”device-pixel-ratio\”:2,\”vertical\”:{\”width\”:768,\”height\”:1024},\”horizontal\”:{\”width\”:1024,\”height\”:768}},\”modes\”:[{\”title\”:\”default\”,\”orientation\”:\”vertical\”,\”insets\”:{\”left\”:0,\”top\”:0,\”right\”:0,\”bottom\”:0}},{\”title\”:\”default\”,\”orientation\”:\”horizontal\”,\”insets\”:{\”left\”:0,\”top\”:0,\”right\”:0,\”bottom\”:0}}],\”show-by-default\”:true,\”show\”:\”Default\”}]”}},”download”:{“directory_upgrade”:true,”extensions_to_open”:”doc:htm:jpeg:jpg:jpg_d11ea26c32178b903f4958f012eadcfd:png:txt”},”extensions”:{“alerts”:{“initialized”:true},”autoupdate”:{“last_check”:”13259218775482861″,”next_check”:”13259235658421882″},”chrome_url_overrides”:{“bookmarks”:[{“active”:true,”entry”:”chrome-extension://eemcgdkfndhakfknompkggombfjjjeno/main.html”}]},”install_signature”:{“expire_date”:”2018-12-20″,”ids”:[“aapocclcgogkmnckokdopfmhonfmgoek”,”aohghmighlieiainnegkcijnfilokake”,”felcaaldnbdncclmgdcncolpebgiejap”,”ghbmnnjooekpmoecnnnilnnbdlolhkhi”]
