Cop gunned down

BAYUGAN CITY, Agusan del Sur – A police officer was gunned down Wednesday by two motorcycle-riding armed men at Purok 2-C, Barangay Taglatawan, Bayugan City, this province, police reported yesterday.

Bayugan City Police Office (BCPO) identified the slain cop as Senior Police Officer 1 Rodrigo G. Coton of this same station.

Coton died from a gunshot wound in the back while being rushed to New Bayugan Medical Hospital in Bayugan City.

Initial investigation showed that the victim was driving his XR 2OO motorcycle on his way home at about 8 p.m. when he was tailed by two motorcycle-riding men and shot him in the back of the body.

Police probers are still determining if the killing was the NPA’s retaliation for the arrest of their two comrades who were caught vandalizing a bridge in Bayugan City during the movement’s anniversary on Dec. 26, 2013.

Investigators are also looking into possible involvement of drug personalities in the killing since Coton was one of the frontliners in the campaign against illegal drugs in Bayugan City. (Mike U. Crismundo)
