ILIGAN CITY – A bridge connecting Kauswagan and Linamon in Lanao del Norte collapsed Tuesday night due to the swelling of Napo river, stranding hundreds of commuters.
Commuters coming from Iligan, Ozamis City and other neighboring towns were stranded and vehicles filled up the national highway on both ends of the Napo bridge, which collapsed at around 9:10 p.m., Tuesday.
Police Supt. Madid Paitao, Provincial Police Office (PPO) director in Lanao del Norte, said half of the Napo bridge collapsed.
Linamon is the eastern gateway to Lanao del Norte since it is the first municipality of southwestern province of Northern Mindanao. Supt. Paitao said the only mode of transportation being used by commuters are motor-outriggers.
“Long lines of vehicles are growing on both sides,” Supt. Paitao said.
He said checkpoints have been put up prior to entering Kauswagan and Linamon to advise commuters.
Meanwhile, six of the nine bridges that submerged in floodwaters caused by the low-pressure area (LPA) remain impassable in Davao region.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said Tuesday the affected bridges, mostly in Davao Oriental, are now being assessed and restored.
DPWH Region 11 Director Mariano Alquiza said the six bridges were declared off limits from the public after the strong current of floodwaters damaged its structure.
Sustaining damages were the bridges along Surigao Sur-Davao Coastal Road namely Quinonoan, Caraga, Gov. Teodoro Palma Gil (Manurigao), and Lumao bridges.
Both Caraga and Manurigao had scoured bridge approaches while Lumao was washed out by floodwaters, Alquiza said.
The Magdug Bridge along Tibanban-Lavigan Road in the municipality of Gov. Generoso is still closed to all types of vehicle due to eroded bridge approach on its abutment.
In Davao del Norte, the floodwaters rendered Governor Miranda Bridge 1 in Tagum City also impassable.
DPWH said the rivers in Davao Oriental were swollen and overflowing that caused the sudden rise of floodwaters on bridges.
Three other bridges were affected by the scouring of its approaches but Ibobotoc and Dakung Banua Bridges in Boston, and Taytayan Bridge in Cateel are passable to vehicular traffic.
Alquiza said that DPWH maintenance crewmen were deployed for embankment works as well as removal of slides on affected sections of Montevista-Mati Boundary Road in Araibo, Liboton, Compostela Valley and Saddle to restore connectivity between Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental.
