Binay wants police discipline

Manila, Philippines –Following the arrest of three policemen for unauthorized discharge of firearms during the holidays, Vice President Jejomar C. Binay yesterday urged the leadership of the Philippine National Police (PNP) to instill greater discipline among its ranks.

The Vice President said that as law enforcers, “the police should be models of behavior for other citizens.”

“We cannot allow these mindless and reckless behavior to continue occurring every year, especially when those involved are officers of the law,” Binay said.

Incidents of indiscriminate gun firing which has victimized civilians should never happen again, Binay urged the police.

“I call on the leadership of the Philippine National Police to investigate the matter thoroughly, punish the guilty, and to be more vigilant in ensuring that these incidents never happen again,” said Binay.

He also urged the courts to ensure the speedy trial of cases of indiscriminate firing so that victims, among them helpless children, could be given justice.

He cited the case of Nicole Ella, a seven-year-old girl who was also a victim of a New Year’s Eve shooting in 2012. “Until now, she has not been given justice. Her family continues to grieve for her and are indignant over the lack of progress in her case,” he lamented. (JC Bello Ruiz)
