Palo Cathedral rebuilding starts

The reconstruction and rebuilding of the Palo Metropolitan Cathedral in Palo, Leyte, destroyed at the height of typhoon “Yolanda,” has started.

Engr. Adonis L. Yap, Senior Marketing Manager-Visayas, Union Galvasteel Corp., an affiliate of the Phinma Foundation Inc., the corporate social responsibility arm of Phinma Corp., said that the reconstruction work will focus on the redesign and restoration of the Cathedral’s main dome structure, while the main roof over the rest of the church will be retrofitted and reinforced to maintain its structural integrity, then completely re-roof it.

“We will also replace the roofing of the convent where the Parish Priest and his staff reside,’’ said Yap. The project will be implemented by the Union Galvasteel Corp., Phinma’s steel roofing company.

Yap said that Bishop John F. Du, the archbishop of the Diocese of Palo, Leyte, lauded the project as a manifestation of the spirit of goodwill and unity between the church and private business.

No timetable has been set for the completion of the project.

But Yap promised better structure for the church when completed. “Bibigyan talaga natin ito ng panahon para mapaganda at mapatibay ang structure ng Cathedral,’’ he added.

Authorities refused to reveal the funds for the initial part of the project. Du earlier said that there is so much work to be done in the rebuilding of the Cathedral. (Robert R. Requintina)
