The Department of Health (DOH) is celebrating National Youth Health Day on December 10, 2013, to highlight programs that address various issues affecting the health, nutrition, and wellness, particularly lifestyle-related issues. DOH is strengthening its partnerships with youth and medical organizations such as the National Youth Commission (NYC). Republic Act (RA) 8044, the Youth in Nation-Building Act, created the NYC in 1995 to be the policy-making and coordinator of youth programs.
Adopting healthy practices during adolescence, and taking steps to better protect young people from health risks are critical to the future of the government’s health and social infrastructure. The youth are at risk for malnutrition, dental problems, sleeping difficulties, sanitation issues, and vices. To better address their health concerns as well as identify health factors and find solutions, the government designs activities and programs to improve access to quality youth-friendly health services and information.
Two of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are relevant to young people’s health. MDG 5 aims to achieve universal access to reproductive health, for which one of the indicators is pregnancy among 15 to 19-year-old girls. MDG 6 seeks to halt the spread of Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS)
The World Health Organization seeks to improve the health of young people by identifying the most effective ways of promoting good health among them and responding to them. It supports countries with policies and programs.
