Laos celebrates its National Day

Today is the 38th Anniversary of the Proclamation of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) which commemorates the 1975 victory of the proletariat over the monarchy.

sayasoneLaos is home to a significant number of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), mostly high-skilled and professional workers working on various projects in the country. These Filipino workers are greatly appreciated by the people and government of Laos because of their valuable contribution to the country’s economic development.

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of the Philippines and the Lao PDR were established shortly after the latter’s independence from France in 1949. The two countries established resident missions in their respective capitals in 1997 following the entry of Laos into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in July 23, 1997. Since then, the two countries have been enjoying warm bilateral relationships. The Philippines was one of the original ASEAN members that campaigned for the realization of the vision of ASEAN-10, which would include Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Viet Nam (CLMV) in the grouping.

Laos Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong visited the Philippines in May 10-12, 2012. President Benigno S. Aquino III participated to the 9th ASEM Summit in Vientiane, Lao PDR, in November 5-6, 2012. The two countries’ Business Councils met in Vientiane, Laos, on November 19, 2012, and on January 17, 2013. In October 16-18, 2013, the Lao-Philippine Business Council arrived in Manila to explore the potentials for trade and investment between the two countries.

We congratulate the people and government of Lao People’s Democratic Republic headed by Their Excellencies, Lt. Gen. President Choummaly Sayasone, Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong, Foreign Affairs
Minister, Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith, and Industry and Economic Minister Nam Vinhakhet and its Embassy in the Republic of the Philippines led by H.E., Ambassador Malayvieng Sakonhninhom, on the occasion of its National Day. CONGRATULATIONS AND MABUHAY!
