Manila, Philippines – Comedian and “Eat Bulaga” mainstay Jose Manalo was charged before the Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office for his alleged failure to provide financial support to his family, including the educational expenses of his 17-year-old daughter.
Manalo (Ariel Manalo in real life) was charged with violation of Republic Act 9262 (Anti-Violence against Women and their Children).
The complainant, Manalo’s 17-year-old daughter represented by lawyer Dennis Pangan, claimed that she was forced to stop her studies because of her father’s failure to provide their family financial support.
In her six-page complaint, Manalo’s daughter said that the comedian left their family home in Quezon City on January 6, 2012 without informing them.
The teenager added that since the respondent abandoned them, Manalo allegedly stopped giving them financial support despite repeated pleas of her mother.
She added that she stopped going to school in August 2013 due to lack of money for transportation and other school expenses.
The complainant further disclosed that she enrolled sometime October 2013 in Raffles Design Institute after the respondent allegedly assured her that he would provide for her tuition.
She added that Manalo only agreed to send financial support for her education when her mother cried and begged to him during the mediation proceedings at the Philippine Mediation Center in
Quezon City on October, 2013.
During the meeting, the respondent allegedly took all the schedule of the payments of the school fees of the complainant.
The respondent paid the initial fees and promised to pay the next installment due on Dec. 1, 2013.
The complainant added that she and her mother asked the comedian to give his number so they can call him but he refused, telling them that he will send financial support and pay her fees on time directly to the school.
However, the respondent allegedly did not pay the school fees due on Dec. 1, 2013.
Due to the non-payment of school fees, the school sent letters and text messages to the complainant, reminding her of school obligations. (Chito Chavez)
