Gunman shoots Fortun’s wife

Atty. Raymon Fortun

Manila, Philippines – The wife of veteran lawyer Raymund Fortun was shot and wounded Thursday night by an unidentified gunman in front of their house in Las Pinas City, police reported yesterday.

Reports reaching the Southern Police District (SPD) headquarters in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City, showed that victim Lumen Caroline Fortun, 43, a resident of Number 139 CRM Avenue, BF Almanza Avenue, Las Pinas City, had just got off her black Mitsubishi Lancer car after attending church duties when an armed man approached and shot her at 8:05 p.m.

After the shooting, the gunman fled on board a motorcycle driven by another man, police said.

Fortun rushed his wife to Perpetual Hospital.

“Carole was shot in front of our house at BF Homes Almanza at 8 p.m. after serving in the mass. She sustained a gunshot wound at the back of the neck and the bullet exited through the right cheek. She is currently in stable condition,” Fortun said.

Fortun said he does not know any reason why someone would want to hurt or kill his wife considering that she had no enemies. He even described his wife as an “angel and a saint.”

He theorized that he could be the real target of the gunman.

“There’s no reason why she (Carole) would be shot. I suspect it’s because of my work,” Fortun said.

Because of the incident, Fortun said he already hired the services of a security to protect him and his family.

Aside from Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada, the 49-year-old Fortun was also a counsel for big-time celebrities such as Kris Aquino, Claudine Barretto, Willy Revillame, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Dra. Vicky Bello, among others. (Francis T. Wakefield)
