DILG orders LGUs to ban firecrackers

Manila, Philippines – Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Mar Roxas directed yesterday the provincial governors, city and municipal mayors, as well as barangay officials to prohibit the sale of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices that may cause injuries or death during the holiday festivities.

At the same time, the DILG Secretary ordered the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) to conduct “intensified joint inspections” of manufacturing sites and warehouses to avoid stockpiling of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices.

He said the combined efforts of the local government units (LGUs), PNP and BFP would help prevent the manufacture, distribution, sale and use of harmful firecrackers and pyrotechnics and devices that may lead to tragic deaths, injuries, or cause destructive fires particularly during Christmas and New Year revelries.

Roxas noted that several local government units in the National Capital Region recorded the highest number of firecracker-related injuries, based on the 2012 Fireworks-Related Injury Surveillance. (Czarina Nicole O. Ong)
