Police release artist sketch of Butalid’s killer

Police are eyeing two possible motives behind the killing of a broadcast journalist who was shot near the radio station where he works in Tagum City.

First, it could be Rogelio Butalid’s being a barangay councilor, what with the fact that he had just assumed as barangay official after winning the barangay elections on October 28, according to Senior Supt. Reuben Theodore Sindac, chief police information officer.

Second, according to Sindac is work-related since Butalid anchors a block time radio program for Davao del Norte Electric Cooperative-National Electrification Administration (Daneco-NEA) at Radyo Natin, which is reportedly embroiled in a violent dispute with a pro-cooperative faction.

The latest update, according to Sindac, is that the Special Investigation Task Group Butalid has already come up with the computerized image of the gunman.

“The local police have already fanned out to various places in the Davao provinces to pursue leads provided thru its intelligence networks on the possible identity and whereabouts of the suspect,” said Sindac.

The official said a witness described the gunman as male, between 40 and 45 years old, 5’4” to 5’5” in height, with slim build and fair complexion, and pimple scars.

During the shooting, the gunman wore a brown sweat shirt and faded black pants.

Earlier, police said they have not established any link indicating a common pattern in the killing of Butalid and two others in Mindanao in a span of two weeks.

“At this early stage of investigation, there are no peculiar indications of a link that can connect the three incidents,” said Sindac.

On November 29, 48-year old radio commentator Jash Dignos of dxGT was shot dead in Valencia City followed by 34-year old Michael Diaz Milo, of Prime Radio FM in Tandag City.

The latest case was that of Butalid. (Aaron Recuenco)
