Koreans among first to deliver relief goods

TACLOBAN CITY – Marietta Brazil, a 39-year-old widow, wants to tell her relatives in Caloocan City that they are alive.

“Please, please po. Pakisabi kay Emy Biscocho, kapatid ko, na buhay kami lahat,” said Brazil over the phone.

Brazil said she could not get Biscocho’s phone number because her mobile phone was destroyed. She said her sister lives in Bagong Barrio, Caloocan.

A week after Typhoon Yolanda struck, survivors continued to depend on relief goods that have started to get through after days of chaos and confusion.

Brazil is among thousands staying at the Tacloban Astrodome, a 5,000-seat indoor arena built in 2006.

The number of evacuees has grown considerably after three truckloads of relief goods arrived Wednesday from South Korea.

Brazil said the Koreans brought rice and canned goods.

“Kakaunti pa lang po kami dito nung dumating ‘yung mga relief goods. Nung nalaman ng iba, nagdagsaan na ng mga tao dito,” she said.

Brazil said they are still awaiting more help as the supplies are running low.

While many were trying to put up a brave face in the face of adversity, others could not cope with the tragedy that befell them.

“Yung kapatid kong lalaki, hanggang ngayon iyak pa rin ng iyak,” said Brazil, who considers themselves lucky to be alive.

They were among those who evacuated to the astrodome, thinking that the structure could withstand Yolanda’s ferocious winds.

What they did not expect was the storm surge that followed.

Brazil said many were trapped and died at the basement of the astrodome during the storm surge.

“Nandoon kasi ‘yung mga CR (comfort room). Doon sila nagluluto. Nandoon pa rin ang mga bangkay,” she said.

During the storm surge, Brazil said they were in the third floor.

“Hindi ko ma-explain pero parang may nagbulong sa akin na huwag kaming aalis sa third floor,” she recalled.

Brazil was also with her 18-year-old daughter Emery Joy who just gave birth last month. The baby is doing fine.
