Manila, Philippines – At least 300 people have been displaced due to New People’s Army (NPA) atrocities in Compostela Valley, the military said.
In a report reaching Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo in Quezon City, the Army’s 10th Infantry Division (ID) said around 300 residents of Sitio Side 4, Barangay Manggayon, Compostela, Compostela Valley were forced to evacuate on Friday morning after they were threatened by the presence of NPAs in their village.
As the villagers fled to the neighboring Sitio Lubog, Barangay Ngan, also in Compostela, they immediately reported the situation in their village to the military.
Troops of the 25th Infantry Battalion were then deployed to the area but when they reached Sitio Side 4, the soldiers were immediately fired upon by the insurgents. A 10-minute firefight ensued.
No casualty was reported on the government side.
Lt. Col. Elmer Aterrado, 25th Infantry Battalion commander, said, “The AFP is always ready to respond to the call of the people and secure them from harassments and intimidations of lawless armed group who will attempt to deprive them from living in a peaceful community.” (Elena L. Aben)
