138 foreign workers held

Bureau of Immigration (BI) has detained for questioning 138 foreigners for working at a construction site in Calaca, Batangas, without the required work permit and visa.

BI Officer-in-Charge Siegfred Mison said yesterday the aliens were rounded up at the project site of the NEPC Power Corp. in Barangay Putting Bato, Calaca after concerned citizens informed the bureau of their presence.

They were later brought to the Immigration Field Office in Batangas City for verification and inquest proceedings.

Mison said none of the foreign workers could show their passports or any travel documents when questioned by a team of BI agents.

The aliens will undergo preliminary investigation prior to the possible filing of charges against them for violating the conditions of their stay.

“We will deport them immediately once the Board of Commissioners established that they have been working here without a visa,” Mison said.

Lawyer Jose Carlitos Licas, BI Intelligence Chief, said his men raided the construction site after several days of surveillance. (Jun Ramirez)
