La Salle completed a rare second round sweep to forge a virtual best-of-three Final Four duel with Far Eastern University after outsteadying University of Santo Tomas in a tense duel, 69-64, in UAAP Season 76 last night at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Last year’s Rookie of the Year winner Jeron Teng produced another stellar performance, tallying 19 points, including a running shot that gave the Green Archers a 66-59 lead with 54.2 seconds remaining.
Norbert Torres added 14 points and 13 rebounds as the Taft-based squad finished the elims tied with National University and FEU for the league’s best record at 10-4.
“No sense of accomplishment for us,” said coach Juno Sauler on the second round sweep. “It’s like a per day basis but what’s more important is what we’ll do in practice.”
The Bulldogs gained the No. 1 spot in the semis by virtue of their superior quotient, thus putting the Archers and the Tams in a collision course for a berth in the finals.
FEU and La Salle meet next week for the second twice-to-beat edge before locking horns anew in the Final Four.
“Sweeping the second round has no advantage whatsoever,” said Sauler on the upcoming matchup.
Earlier, University of the East snapped a four-game skid by downing Adamson, 77-60. The Red Warriors improved to 6-7.
Meantime, the cheerdance contest today at te Mall of Asia Arena will be a wide-open race among defending champion University of the Philippines, NU, UST and FEU.
