Shun greed – Tagle

By LESLIE ANN G. AQUINO

Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal G. Tagle urged Filipinos yesterday to shun greed and live a simple life because the abundance of some may cause hunger for the poor.

“We have to lead a life that is not characterized by lavishness, but instead by adequateness that allows us to live simply and properly,” Tagle said in an article posted on the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) website.

Tagle urged the people to turn away from self-centeredness and be more sensitive to the needs of the greater majority.

“Do not fall to the trap of egoism. Our time now calls for humility, and those who live in greedy abundance greatly affect the common good,” he said.

Tagle’s message came at the height of the “pork barrel” scam.

“Look at the crisis we are experiencing now. The arrogance of those who claim what is not theirs is very appalling,” Tagle said.

“That is egoism. But do not fear for those who show great arrogance lose everything. They will be forced to accept the fact that they do not own anything,” he added.

Meanwhile, Tagle presided over a mass at the San Fernando de Dilao Parish in Paco, Manila last Saturday for the launching of the Season of Creation campaign of the Archdiocese of Manila.

The archdiocese launched the campaign to bring the care and protection of the environment to the spiritual level.

Also known in some countries as “Creation Time,” the Season of Creation involves six Sundays from September 1 to October 4, the feast of St. Francis of Assisi.

The Season of Creation focuses on theology, worship, and ethics and is directed towards God’s relationship with all creation and human beings’ relationship with creation, and with God through creation.
