Revolutionary leader finally home

Revolutionary leader Gen. Emiliano Riego de Dios is finally home, Vice President Jejomar C. Binay said, when he witnessed the transfer of Riego de Dios’ remains to his hometown in Maragondon, Cavite last Saturday which also marked the 149th birth anniversary of the “secretary of war” of the Tejeros Convention.

De diosRiego de Dios’ remains were previously buried at the Mausoleo de los Veteranos de la Revolucion in Cementerio del Norte or the Manila North Cemetery.

Binay underscored Riego de Dios’ heroism, noting how he abandoned power and influence to join the Katipunan for the revolution against the Spaniards. Riego de Dios had served as “gobernadorcillo” and “capitan municipal” of Maragondon.

He and his brothers Vicente and Mariano joined the Katipunan in July 21, 1896.

“Ipinamalas ni Riego de Dios ang kahandaan niyang iwanan ang kapangyarihan alang-alang sa bayan. Hindi siya nagdalawang-isip na sumapi sa Katipunan kahit na siya’y may katungkulan sa isang lipunang pinaghaharian ng pamahalaang mapanikil sa karapatan ng mga Pilipino,” said Binay.

Riego de Dios died on February 4, 1926 at the age of 62. (JC Bello Ruiz)
