Defends daily photo updates of Napoles
By MADEL S. NAMIT
Malacañang said yesterday that there is nothing wrong with the daily photo updates by the Philippine National Police (PNP) on detained businesswoman Janet L. Napoles amid insinuations coming from her camp not to make her detention a reality show.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said the PNP is only giving updates on Napoles’ detention “for the sake of transparency.”
Napoles’ lawyer, Lorna Kapunan, said the PNP should not be releasing daily photos and itinerary of her client inside her detention facility. Kapunan also expressed concern that footages from the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras placed inside Napoles’ detention facility would be made public.
She said her client’s life inside the detention facility should not be made a reality show.
Valte, however, said there is nothing wrong with updating the media on what is happening inside Napoles’ detention cell.
“The PNP is doing this for the sake of transparency kasi nakita naman natin, maraming interesado talaga sa kaso kaya nagbibigay tayo ng daily updates para mabigyan ng idea yung mga kawani ng media na nagbabantay doon,” Valte said.
Valte noted that it is only through photo updates that the media are provided developments on Napoles, considering that there is tight security around Fort Santo Domingo in Santa Rosa City, Laguna, where Napoles is being detained.
“Wala naman sigurong masama sa pagbibigay ng updates sa mga kawani ng media,” she said.
The Palace official, meanwhile, admitted that the pork barrel scam is a challenge for the Aquino administration.
“Certainly, it’s a challenge that we face and that we accept,” Valte said, noting that in the end, what the administration wants is for those responsible for the Priority Development Assistance Fund scam to be held accountable.
“To get to that, we have to be assured that the cases that will be filed are based on solid evidence,“ she said. “We are also facing challenges in the length that cases are tried in our country and we are hoping to work with other branches of government.“
