Galedo rules SEAG cycling qualifier

TAGAYTAY City – Former Ronda Pilipinas champion Mark John Lexter Galedo outraced four fellow breakaway rivals, including Jun Ray Navarra, in the final 100 meters yesterday to win the 140-kilometer qualifying race to the 27th Southeast Asian Games this December in Myanmar.

Fresh from his victory in a Hawaii race, Galedo, 27, and Navarra, reigning Ronda Pilipinas King of the Mountain and one of four riders from Mindanao, clocked an identical time of 3:31.33.85.

Galedo dedicated his victory to his new born child Parish Hazell Doll Ruby.

“The best na regalo na `to para sa anak ko at sa ‘king birthday sa isang linggo,“ said Galedo, racing under the color of 7/11 team.

Ronald Oranza, skipper of LBC and runnerup to Ronda Pilipinas champion Irish Valenzuela, figured in a collision with Reimund Lapaza in the last three kilometers. Unmindful of his bleeding left knee, the former bike mechanic boarded his bike and salvaged third place in 3:31.34.65.

“Hindi ko na ininda yung sakit at tayo agad ako. Sayang hindi ko na sila inabot,“ said Oranza.

Boots Ryan Cayubit came in fourth in 3:31.40.56; followed by John Paul Morales 3:32.13.95; Reimundo Lapaza 3:32.13.99; Joel Calderon 3:36.44.41; Jonipher Ravina 3:36.48; and Arnold Marcelo 3:37.01.

“We will discuss and select the nine remaining riders who will compete in the SEA Games. We will quarter them and train them with national coaches,“ said Philcycling president and Cavite 7th district Rep. Abraham Tolentino.

Heavy downpour came after the 57 riders who answered the firing gun from Philippine Olympic Committee representative Jeff Tamayo were flagged off in front of City Hall.

Fil-Am brothers Daniel and Christopher, meanwhile, are the country’s representatives in BMX. The two are currently training in the United States where they are based. (Clyde Mariano)
