In the last three decades, the annual Manila International Book Fair (MIBF) has evolved from an exhibit for the publishing industry and the academe to a much-awaited event for book readers and collectors. As the MIBF (Words Without Borders) continues to evolve, its goal continues the same: To bring books closer to the Filipino people.
The 34th MIBF, the biggest and longest-running book fair, opens on September 11-15, 2013, at Mall of Asia in Pasay City, with over 300 local and foreign exhibitors – publishers, local and international book stores, book advocacy groups, and literary shops – display old and new titles, including those by Filipino authors. Over the past 34 years, the MIBF has contributed to Filipinos’ reading awareness and love for reading. Its organizer, Primetrade Asia, has vowed to keep abreast of modern technology and breakthroughs in the digital age to effectively promote good reading habits among Filipinos.
Special activities enliven the five-day fair: Storytelling, poetry reading, book signing and launching, literary awards, quiz bee, interactive display, dialogues with readers, and Bible quiz. Co-events are “the Best of Anime” to draw Japanese culture enthusiasts, “Educare Conference” for parents, teachers, school administrators and child psychologists, and “National Conference on Language and Literature” that gathers scholars, educators, and writers.
The MIBF began as Bookfair Manila in the old Philcite grounds in 1980, a joint project of the Book Development Association of the Philippines and Philcite. In 1986, it moved to the bigger Philippine Trade Training Center in 1990, then to Megatrade Hall in 1993, to the World Trade Center in 2004-2007, and to the SMX Convention Center in 2008. It was named MIBF in 2003 as book fairs worldwide are called after the city where it is held. The range of books has grown to include literature, trade books, inspirational titles, Filipiniana, pocketbooks, and travel magazines.
