‘AKAPELA OPEN’ DEADLINE: SEPT. 28 – Maestro Ryan Cayabyab reminds that the deadline for Akapela Open is extended from Sept. 7 to Sept. 28. So all singing groups with a minimum number of three and a maximum number of 12, aged 18 and above, may still join “Akapela Open.”
For more information, log on to “Akapela Open” official website: www.akapela.com.
Ryan said that singing a capella without accompaniment may sound easy, but it’s actually tough, very, very demanding. Singers will attest to that.
But then singing a capella is most satisfying and enriching. After all, the human voice is the most beautiful musical instrument. Great artists could attest to that. The likes of the late Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. Or recent Manila visitor Tony Bennett.
Or Ryan himself, who years back recorded an a capella CD.
So all a capella groups are urged to join “Akapela Open.” It may lead to a musical career.
The contest is spearheaded by The Music School of Ryan Cayabyab in cooperation with PLDT Smart Foundation and One Meralco Foundation.
‘RYAN, RYAN MUSIKAHAN’ – Must confess that this old soul enjoys listening to the replays of “Ryan, Ryan Musikahan” on Jeepney TV. Nothing beats the song of yesterday, be they Filipino or English – or Spanish or French.
One time Katy de la Cruz, Mitch Valdez, and Celeste Legaspi were Ryan’s guests. They sang songs from the musical “Katy,” based on the life and times of Ms. Dela Cruz.
Mommy Kate sang the likes of “Balot,” “A Tear Fell” mixed with a Tagalog lyrics, and the naughty “Saging ni Pacing.”
It was magical, with Mitch and Celeste gladly playing second fiddle to Mommy Kate. Well, Mommy Kate is long gone, making sweet music in another world. That edition of “Ryan, Ryan” should be preserved for posterity.
Featured were online “sensations,” including two young boys who guested in Ellen Degeneres’ show. Paolo Bediones on the piano. Charice and girlfriend Allysa. Glad to hear that Charice sang Whitney Houston songs with restraint, not shouting and screaming as she was wont to do. She has definitely matured as a performer.
One request though from Mega and Ogie — more old songs, please. Eager to hear the songs written by Willie Cruz, George Canseco, Rey Valera, Ryan Cayabyab.
Is there a way they can sing kundiman every now and then?
