Gospel Reading: Lk 8:19-21
Jesus’ mother and His brothers came to Him but were unable to join Him because of the crowd. He was told, “Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside and they wish to see You.” He said to them in reply, “My mother and My brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it.”
Hear the word of God and act on it. This short passage continues the thought of the preceding (Lk 8:16-18). The word of God is not only to be believed but to be practiced and lived. Those who hear the word of God and act upon it are joined to Jesus by a bond that is even greater than the ties created by blood. Thus, Jesus can say, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it.” We can add that nothing makes us more like Jesus than hearing and practicing the word of God.
In the matter of hearing the word of God and acting upon it, Mary is first. Thus, she is Jesus’ Mother not only because she bears him in her womb but because, like him, she hears and acts upon the word of God.
“The Virgin Mary, who believed by faith and conceived by faith… did she not do the will of the Father?” — (St. Augustine).
