Former Manny Pacquiao’s former conditioning coach has apparently found a new home in Brandon Rios, who is revving up for a Nov. 24 faceoff with the Filipino icon in Macau.
The addition of Alex Ariza to Rios’ camp has been well-received by lead trainer Robert Garcia, who has nothing bad to say about the new guy in Team Rios.
“Not one person has ever told me anything good about him. Everybody tells me a negative thing. And believe me, it’s everybody, not just one person,” Garcia told Chris Robinson of the website hustleboss.
“But I like his work. He does a good job with the morning workouts,” said Garcia, who has talked things over with Ariza in relation to his role in Rios’ corner.
“I run the show (in the corner),” said Garcia.
Garcia stressed that once Ariza starts doing things outside his line of work, he will be told to leave. Ariza, who started working with Pacquiao in 2008, was given the pink slip last month by Freddie Roach.
Roach said the Colombian-born Ariza didn’t stick to his primary role as fitness guru and tried to do someone else’s job, creating a rift inside the team.
The past few weeks, Rios has been expressing his delight over Ariza’s presence. (Nick Giongco)
