Power Pinays lose to Aussies

NAKHON RATCHASIMA, Thailand – The Philippine team failed to sustain its winning run in the 17th Asian Volleyball Championship as Australia brought the Power Pinays back to earth following a three-set victory Thursday night at the MCC Hall of the Mall here.

The 25-22, 25-15, 25-23 loss denied the Power Pinays a top 10 finish in the biennial meet. They will now face opening-day tormentor India for 11th place.

Coach Nestor Pamilar goaded the team to put the loss behind them and instead, concentrate on its final game against the Indians on Friday.

“Kalimutan ninyo ang talo,” Pamiliar told the Power Pinays, who are supported by PLDT HOME Fibr broadband in this trip. “Isipin ninyo ang laban bukas.”

“Ibigay niyo na lahat! Para sa sarili niyo at para sa bansa!”

Honey Royse Tubino led the Filipina spikers with 10 points off seven attacks and three blocks, while Wenneth Eulalio and Aiza Maizo-Pontillas had eight points apiece.

After winning back-to-back games against Sri Lanka and Myanmar at the start of the classification phase, the Power Pinays suddenly found no answer against the Aussies. To their credit though, the Filipina spikers fought their opponents tooth and nail and had the chance to stretch the game following a tough stand in the deciding third set.

They rallied back to tie the contest at 22-all, before the Aussies moved to match point after scoring off an attack and an ace.

PH team captain Angeline Tabaquero countered with an attack for the Power Pinays’ final stand, 23-24, as Australia would finish the match in the next possession with an emphatic crosscourt kill.

Pamilar gave the Power Pinays a piece of his mind shortly after the match.

“Ang problema, ang bilis bumaba ng morale niyo.” said Pamilar in his post-game huddle.
