Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle, has called on Catholic Philippines to continue tounite with the world in praying and fasting for peace and harmony among nations. Citizens of the world may be geographically separated but they are united by their common humanity, he said. He asked the faithful to pray for fellow-Filipinos working in distant shores.
It is hard to remove individualism from day-to-day living, but it is in the act of others where the world’s hardships come from, Cardinal Tagle said, urging Filipinos to give the gift of self and do little acts of sacrifice for others. He said: We have the mission of building peace. Peace, however, can only be promoted by peacemakers who seek the common good and spread honesty, respect, and friendship.
The call of Cardinal Tagle was in solidarity with Pope Francis who presided over a global day of fasting and prayer for Mideast peace on September 7, 2013, at the Vatican in Rome. The World Council of Churches, United States of America Conference of Catholic Bishops, and religious leaders globally heeded his call and spent the night in prayer. Catholics in Jerusalem held a vigil at the Church of Gethsemane. In Mumbai, they gathered at the Cathedral of the Holy Name. A giant peace flag was raised in Assisi, Italy.
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines joined the global day of prayer and fasting. Bishops led shrines and churches in activities such as mass offering, Holy Hour, vigil and recitation of the rosary to seek the intercession of Mary, Queen of Peace. The last time a Pope called a global day of prayer and fasting was a decade ago on March 2, 2003 (Ash Wednesday), when Pope, now Blessed, John Paul II, designated it a special day of prayer for peace.
We pray for His Holiness, Pope Francis, and His Eminence, Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle, in their spiritual journey of bringing the message of peace, reconciliation and dialogue, and the value of prayers, to our nations and peoples. May God bless us all! MABUHAY!
