Commuters oppose fare hike

Commuters are assailing the plan of transport operators to increase public transportation fares following the significant oil price hikes last week.

The riding public is generally against the plan of operators to hike minimum jeepney fares by P2. Although there is no fare hike petition filed at the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), jeepney drivers and operators are intending to file a joint petition anytime this week.

A commuter said any fare hike petition should only be implemented after a parallel wage increase.

For her part, Karen Martinez, appealed to transport operators to understand the plight of commuters and reconsider their plan.

Operators want the minimum rate increased from P8 to P10, and asked government regulators to grant a provisional increase of P1 while their petition is being deliberated. (Kris Bayos)
