ALTHOUGH considered in the industry as a fine actress, Julia Clarete chooses her projects carefully.
After winning the Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Jeffrey Jeturian’s “Bisperas” in 2011, the 33-year-old thespian was only seen in two other films, “Shake, Rattle & Roll 13″ by the end of that year and only “Guni-Guni” in 2012.
Following two consecutive horror films, a comedy seems to be a logical choice for her next project as she has learned to be adept at making people laugh given her longtime stint as one of the co-hosts of “Eat Bulaga”.
The actress, however, swears that while Randolph Longjas’ CineFilipino entry “Ang Turkey Man ay Pabo Rin” is quite refreshing for her, it was also very challenging.
“As much as I get my fair dose of humor everyday in ‘Eat Bulaga,’ doing comedy in film is more structured and the timing is different,” she told InterAksyon in a recent interview. “There are lines to adhere to and sometimes there are several takes for one scene. The challenge is not just to react to a punch line as if it was the first time it was delivered but also to keep from laughing during takes.”
And then, there was also the long hours of filming. But it was all worth it for Julia as this was a project she fell in love with the minute she first read the script.
“It was the plot that got me to the last page — a timely story that addresses the touching and oft times hilarious journey of a Filipina in a relationship with a foreigner.”
Describing the film’s young director as “crazy,” Julia nonetheless praises Longjas for his ability to “draw inspiration from the personality of his actors.”
“Randolph reminds me a lot of the late phenomenal director Gilbert ‘Manong’ Perez who directed me in ‘Trip’ and ‘Jologs’. God bless his spirit,” she pointed out.
Up next for Julia is her own book called “The Happy Factory”, a fiction novel with 20 to 24 chapters which she describes as an “easy read”. For now, she’s focusing on promoting “Ang Turkey Man ay Pabo Rin”.
Written by Ronald Allan Habon, the film will be shown from Sept. 18 to 24 as a part of the CineFilipino Film Festival at Newport Cinemas of Resorts World Manila, Lucky Chinatown Mall and Gateway Cineplex. (InterAksyon)
