OJ Mariano rocks in Lorenzo

GAWAD Buhay best actor awardee OJ Mariano has landed the lead role of Laurence in “Lorenzo,” a new stage musical inspired by the life of San Lorenzo Ruiz, the first Filipino canonized as a saint for his martyrdom in Japan.

awaiting his fate on death row.

Lorenzo marks actor Christopher de Leon’s first venture into theatrical production. The veteran award-winning actor has recently set up his own company, Green Wings Entertainment Network, which has tapped Ryan Cayabyab as composer-arranger and Nonon Padilla as stage director.

“Lorenzo” goes on stage at the SDA Theater of De La Salle-College of St. Benilde in Manila on Sept. 5, 6, 7, 12, 13 and 14 with shows at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Mariano, who won his first best actor in a musical trophy from Phi!stage for his performance in 2012’s “Rama Had,” says “Lorenzo” is a musical within a play that is told in three acts. Music ranges from rock to operatic, says producer de Leon.

De Leon explains, “Lorenzo is a contemporary opera with plenty of surprises.”
