Malaysia celebrates today its National Day, also known as Hari Merdeka. The theme for this year’s celebration is “My Sovereign Malaysia; My Native Land.”
Hari Merdeka commemorates the independence of the Federation of Malaya from British colonial rule in 1957. On this day, parades, a royal procession, military demonstration, and cultural performances are held in the country. People usually gather at Merdeka Square in Kuala Lumpur where the main celebrations are held.
Malaysia and the Philippines enjoy strong bilateral relationships. They are founding members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
