Gunmen killed an official of the Department of Education (DepEd) in Basilan and his teacher wife in an ambush in Lamitan City on Monday, a police official said yesterday.
Senior Supt. Mario Dapilloza, director of the Basilan provincial police, said the attack also result ed in the wounding of another teacher who was travelling with the couple during the attack that occurred at around 2:30 p.m. in Barangay Maloong Canal.
He identified the two fatalities as Rodolfo Saavedra and his wife Gloria, an elementary school teacher in Isabela City. They both died on the spot from bullet wounds during the attack.
Dapilloza said the couple, along with a certain Joy Cubico, were on their way back to Isabela City when they were waylaid by three armed men.
Cubico was taken to the nearby hospital for treatment of the wounds she suffered.
“The suspects fled using the motorcycle of the victims,” said Dapilloza.
SPO4 Eleazar Tani, officer-on-case of the Lamitan City Police, said they are now focusing on getting the stolen motorcycle of the victims as it could lead them to the perpetrators.
“We have not yet established the motive, but we are looking at all angles,” said Tani. (Aaron Recuenco)
