Milo Little Olympics kicks off in Cebu

The 26th Milo Little Olympics fires off on August 26 with the staging of the first leg in Cebu City at the Abellana Sports Complex.

More than 5,000 elementary and secondary athletes from public and private schools are seeing action in the first phase of the four-leg grassroots competition.

The sportsfest features athletics, badminton, chess, football, gymnastics, lawn tennis, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, volleyball, sepak takraw and scrabble.

“We’re expecting new stars will shine from the athletes out to prove their worth in their pet events,“ said Milo Sports Executive Andrew Neri during yesterday’s PSA Forum at Shakey’s Malate.

After the Visayas leg, the second phase goes to Mindanao in Cagayan de Oro City’s Don Gregorio Pelaez Sports Complex on August 23-25, then proceed to National Capital Region in Marikina on Aug. 30 to Sept. 8, then shifts to Luzon in Baguio on Sept. 6-8.

All the winners from the elimination legs will receive all expense paid trips to Cebu for the national finals on Oct. 25-27, apart from P40,000, P20,000 and P10,000 that will be given to the first three places in both elementary and secondary levels.

“Filipinos have a huge heart for basketball is the reason we include this year’s edition of the tournament,“ said Milo Sports Executive Robbie de Vera.

Team Visayas failed to win its fourth consecutive victory and lost to NCR which bagged the perpetual trophy for the first time as overall champion held at Marikina Sports Complex which featured more than 30,000 athletes.

Former Milo Sports Executive Pat Goc Ong said the number of participants is expected to surpass last year’s field because more athletes from the provinces nationwide are competing. (Clyde Mariano)
