KALIBO International Airport (KIA), the gateway to Boracay, is currently in a chaotic condition.
This was aired by Aklan Governor Joeben T. Miraflores in a speech before the recent induction ceremonies of the Boracay Foundation, Inc.(BFI) at the Boracay Regency Hotel.
The provincial governor, who until recently was Aklan congressman for three consecutive terms and chairman of the House committee on tourism, described the chaotic state of the KIA. He appealed to Senate President Franklin Drilon for help.
Drilon, who is an acknowledged top leader of Western Visayas, was guest of honor during the BFI affair. He graciously committed to extend possible assistance in further upgrading the Kalibo International Airport.
Miraflores earlier expressed his disappointment over the mess obtaining at the Kalibo airport, and so did my colleague, Philippine Star noted columnist Boo Chanco.
Boo, in his Aug. 12 column, deplored the situation at the Kalibo airport. He said the airport terminal simply cannot take in the increasing number of passengers being disgorged by domestic and direct flights from Korea, China, Japan and even Russia, on a daily basis. There is also not enough space on the ground to take in more than four A320s at a time.
Boo, who considers Tourism Secretary Mon Jimenez as an advertising legend of his generation, said: “One of the first lessons in advertising I learned many years ago from the late Antonio de Joya is this: nothing kills a good product or service faster than great advertising. I am seeing this happening right now in our tourism effort.“
“It’s more fun in the Philippines“ was formulated by Jimenez. Can we live up to that promise?
Ms. Vicky Ramos-Antonino, cochairperson of the Aklan Provincial Tourism Council, has joined the well-respected Philippine Star columnist in saying there exists high interest among tourists in Boracay.
Despite the bad experiences encountered by the two US-based daughters of Boo Chanco, he was very objective in his observation about the prevailing situation affecting tourism, particularly the chaotic conditions at the Kalibo airport.
It is earnestly hoped the management of the Kalibo airport would be improved. Its inadequate vital facilities such as flight monitors, public address system, parking space for aircrafts should promptly be addressed by DoTC Sec. Jun Abaya.
