There will be no extension of the registration period for the synchronized barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls, said the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
“Walang extension. 5 o’ clock in the afternoon. July 31. Yan ang deadline,” Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes said.
“Bakit namin i-extend? Ang dami naman nagpapa-register,” Brillantes added.
Comelec spokesman James Jimenez described as unprecedented the number of registrants that lined up in all offices of election officers (OEOs) in the first day of voters registration last July 22.
Jimenez said barangay officials are not committing any illegal acts by “assisting” their constituents.
Reports said that barangay officials are bringing in large groups of applicants in exchange for money, food, and transportation.
“Technically speaking, wala tayong makitang problema diyan kasi sasabihin diyan assistance yan e,” Jimenez said.
But he said barangay officials are not allowed to meddle once the applicants are inside the
“Ang palagi natin pinapaalala at the registration centers dapat wag makialam ang barangay officials,” said Jimenez.
“If you want to help your constituents by bringing them to the registration center, that’s fine, but pagdating doon sa registration center huwag kayo makialam kasi palalabasin kayo,” he added.
The Comelec said it expects that around 700,000 will register as regular voters for the barangay elections and two million for SK. (Leslie Ann G. Aquino)
