Manila, Philippines – The population of the province of Quezon, with the exception of Lucena City, has tripled in 50 years.
It now has a population of 1,740,638 as of May 1, 2010, up by 257,683 from 1,482,955 in the 2000 Census of Population and Housing (CPH), with an average annual population growth rate (PGR) of 1.61 percent.
If the 1.61 percent PGR from 2000 to 2010 continues, the population of Quezon would double in 43 years, the NSO said.
Furthermore, according to the agency, the population of Quezon 50 years ago was only 561,335, less than one-third of its population in the latest CPH.
Among the lone city and 39 municipalities comprising the province of Quezon, the municipality of Sariaya was the most populous with a population size making up eight percent of the total provincial population.
The municipality of Candelaria came in second with 6.4 percent, followed by the municipality of Tiaong with 5.3 percent, City of Tayabas with 5.3 percent, Lopez with 5.2 percent, and Gumaca with four percent.
The rest of the municipalities contributed less than four percent each.
The least populated area was the municipality of Jomalig with 0.4 percent share in the total population of the province. It was also the least populated area in 2000.
Of the 1,738,015 household population in 2010, males accounted for 51 percent while females comprised 49 percent, resulting in a sex ratio of 104 males for every 100 females, similar to the sex ratio recorded in 2000 (105 males per 100 females).
Meanwhile, the province of Cavite has a total population of 3,090,691 as of May 1, 2010, up 1,027,530 from 2,063,161 in the 2000 CPH, with a PGR of 4.12 percent, lower than the 5.99 percent PGR between census years 1990 and 2000.
If the 4.12 percent PGR continues, the population of Cavite would double in 17 years, the NSO said.
Fifty years ago, the population of Cavite was only 378,138. The population size is less than one-eighth of the population of the province in the 2010 CPH.
Among the six cities and 17 municipalities of Cavite, the City of Dasmariñas was the most populous with a population size making up 18.6 percent of the total provincial population. (Czarina Nicole Ong)
