A passenger bus hit and subsequently rammed a tricycle in Calauag town in Quezon province for more than 50 meters on Monday morning, resulting in the death of all the nine people on board the trike.
Senior Supt. Dionardo Carlos, director of the Quezon provincial police, said eight of the tricycle passengers died on the spot while its driver died while being treated at an undisclosed hospital.
Carlos identiﬁ ed the fatalities as Natividad Breva, 51;Federico Tapalla Ebiernas, 44;Letecia Lascano Ebiernas, 43;Jackielyn Pera Casabon, 29;Krizel Olivar Pera, 14;Glicel Pera Casabon, 9;Daniela Tenoreo Olanda, 9;Kathleen Pera Casabon, 7;and, driver Redentor Ingente Olanda, 37.
Carlos said the Bicol-bound Arandia passenger bus hit the tricycle after occupying the opposite lane of the national road when it overtook another bus.
The accident occurred at around 7:30 a.m. yesterday in Barangay Biyan.
“The tricycle was dragged forward by 56 meters from the point of impact with all the passengers on board the tricycle, three of them children, died,” said Carlos. The driver of the bus, Albert Oli, was immediately detained at the police station. The bodies of the victims, on the other hand, were taken at the Sutarez Funeral Home in Calauag, Quezon.
Reckless imprudence resulting to multiple homicide and damage to property will be ﬁ led against Oli at the proper court.
Road accidents are common in the Philippines, with overspeeding and bad overtaking as among the main reasons. An average of 1,000 people die every year on road accidents, according to the records of the police’s Highway Patrol Group. (Aaron Recuenco)
