Barangay elections should push through - Aquino

CAVITE CITY - President Benigno S. Aquino III on Tuesday said he is not inclined with the proposed postponement of the barangay elections.

Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairman Sixto Brillantes has proposed the postponement of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections in October, saying it would be better to hold the elections next year or in early 2015 to give way to election protests in the midterm polls.

Barangay and SK elections are held every three years on the last Monday of October. President Aquino however expressed apprehensions on the postponement of the barangay elections.

There might be other election postponements thereafter like what we have experienced in the past and we must remember that it is a part of our mandate that we need to secure the elections periodically,” Aquino said in Filipino.

The President said that the Comelec, as part of its mandate, should ensure that future elections should push through. The conduct of elections is mandated by law. (Madel Sabater Namit)
