2 p.m. SSC vs UST
4 p.m. USC vs NU
Manila, Philippines – National University seeks a third straight win and a berth in the quarterfinals against winless University of San Carlos in Group B today (Thursday) while UST and San Sebastian clash in a key Group A match in the Shakey’s V-League Season 10 First Conference at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Bulldogs have racked up back-to-back wins over the Arellano Chiefs and the Adamson Lady Falcons both in four sets in a big start for a team that struggled to finish seventh here last year. But with the way the Bustillos-based squad is playing, chances are the Lady Bulldogs are in for an impressive finish.
In fact, they shoot for no less than the second quarters berth after Group A leader and defending back-to-back champion Ateneo with odds heavily stacked on them in the 4 p.m. contest.
Led by sisters Aleona and Jaja Santiago and Myla Pablo, Aiko Urdas, Maricar Nepomuceno and Rubie de Leon, the Lady Bulldogs have emerged the best spiking team in the early going of the tournament, knocking in 104 spikes from 285 attempts for a 36.49 percent norm. They also show the way in service, setting and reception.
Still, the USC Lady Warriors are expected pour it all out in a bid to stay in the hunt following two losses, including a fiveset heartbreaker to the Arellano Lady Chiefs last week. They hope to neutralize the Lady Bulldogs’ vaunted firepower with their blocking prowess with guest player Abigail Praca leading the league in that department with six.
UST and SSC, meanwhile, tangle in the 2 p.m. opener with the former seeking a follow-up to its straight-set win over La Salle-Dasmariñas after bowing to Ateneo in the inaugurals of the league sponsored by Shakey’s.
But the Lady Stags, who also lost to the Lady Eagles in four, are raring to strike back and get their title campaign going, making it truly a match to watch.
