‘The Voice’ is much welcomed

ANOTHER ONE? – Another singing contest on television? Aren’t there too many already?

LEA SalongaNot at all. There are so many gifted singers in the country waiting to be discovered and built up that another one is very much welcomed.

ABS-CBN is launching in June “The Voice of the Philippines,” the local version of America’s “The Voice,” hosted by Carson Daly, with Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green, and Black Shelton as coaches.

Kane Errol Choa, ABS-CBN corporate affairs & PR director, says that “The Voice” has a unique format with its “blind auditions,’ where hopefuls will audition by singing onstage with the coaches facing against them.

It’ll not only have the hopefuls competing in the show, but also the coaches who will go against one another in picking the best artist for their teams as early as the auditions round.

The process is rather complicated that is best watched than wirtten about.

COACHES – The four coaches of “The Voice” are very impressive. Lea Salonga, Apl.de.ap., Bamboo, and Sarah Geronimo.

At the presscon, Sarah wonders if ABS-CBN was serious in making her a coach. “Am I credible to be one?”

Yes, you are, my dear Sarah G. You are a product of a singing contest on television, just like Nora Aunor, Regine Velasquez, Rachelle Ann Go, Erik Santos, Christina Bautista, among others.

“Kaya nga pa-English-English an rin ako,” Sarah laughs.

‘YOU HAVE TO GO’ – Apl.de.ap says he’ll have a hard time when elimination time comes, saying it’s difficult to say “you have to go” or “you’re out.”

But then Apl.de.ap and Lea, Bamboo, and Sarah will surely be kind and diplomatic to the losers. Perhaps the coaches will encourage them to try and try and try again.

Come to think of it, some losers end up becoming bigger names than winners. Freddie Aguilar of “Anak” fame and Charice come to mind.

HOSTS – Toni Gonzaga and Robi Domingo are hosts of “The Voice.”

Robi’s a product of a TV contest, not singing though but reality show, “Pinoy Big Brother.” Toni, actress and singer, is an old hand in hosting, notably PBB and “The Buzz.”

In the later part of “The Voice,” viewers can join from having their favorites eliminated by voting.
