Manila, Philippines –Students who are members of school organizations implementing environmental programs, projects, and activities as well as teachers and school officials who oversee them are set to gather for this year’s Youth for Environment Summer (YES) Camp led by the Department of Education (DepEd).
To be held at the Teachers Camp in Baguio City from April 9 to 12, the YES Camp is an initiative led by the DepEd-Center for Students and Co-Curricular Affairs (CSCA) along with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Special Concerns Office-Youth Desk (DENR-Youth Desk) and the Office of the Presidential Assistant for Climate Change.
In partnership with the Kabataang Sama-Samang Maglilingkod (KASAMA) Inc. and Miriam PEACE (Public Education and Awareness Campaign for the Environment), the 2013 YES Camp has the theme “Reducing Our Carbon Footprint.“
Education Secretary Armin Luistro, through DepEd Memorandum No. 39, Series of 2013, said that the YES Camp will emphasize the significance of climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts and focuses on how each individual, school, and community nationwide can contribute in reducing the carbon footprint.
He explained that this activity is anchored on Republic Act (RA) No. 9512 (Environmental Awareness and Education Act of 2008) and RA No. 9729 (Climate Change Act of 2009). (Ina Hernando Malipot)
