PBA: “Referees called it Spot On” – Salud

Manila, Philippines – In an interview during halftime of the Ginebra-Barako Bull tiff, PBA commissioner Angelico “Chito” Salud explained that the referees made the correct call, referring to the double lane violation that happened just as Aces’ rookie Calvin Abueva was about to attempt his second free throw.

“In the case of the game last night, you could see that when the ball was handed to Calvin, four players (two from each team) went inside the arc. It’s a free throw violation and in that case, no score can be made” Salud said.

“Automatic yon jumpball yon, hit the shot or miss the shot jumpball yon. Now kung isa lang ang pumasok let’s say for example offensive player ang pumasok, then the shot is nullified. Turnover yon”.

“If it is only the defensive player who enters the arc or the lane in any case before the release of the ball then pagna-miss, isa pa. Bibigyan pa ng isang foul throw.”

“Kung pumasok in the case of Calvin, counted yon. But we all saw that both teams violated that rule and the referees called it spot on, correct call yon” Atty. Salud said.

After that the PBA chief also explained why he had summoned certain personalities tomorrow at the PBA office:

“Well, I saw on the paper and online that there were statements issued by Coach Luigi Trillo that were simply incorrect and misinformed which tends to mislead our fans in understanding the rules of basketball. So, that’s one reason” he said.

“Another reason is that after the game, and there is a rule to this – No member of any team can approach or confront our game officials. There is a purpose to that. One is to instill sportsmanship and second to make sure that they have emotionally cooled down” Salud explained.

“An important message, in instilling the values of sportsmanship sa ating mga players, I want to emphasize that I look to our coaches as my partners in making sure that our players understand their responsibility to become role models.”

“Coaches are my partners and that is my purpose in calling coach Luigi Trillo tomorrow” Salud said upon ending the interview. (Brian Yalung)
