14 fatalities in Leyte landslide

Manila, Philippines – Fourteen construction workers were confirmed dead in the Leyte landslide last March 1 after the body of the last missing victim was found yesterday.

Colonel Rafael Valencia, commanding officer of the Army 802nd Brigade based in Ormoc City, identified the fatalities as Etchild de la Cerna, Joel Milay, Billy Avila, Edgardo Cabarsi Sr., Bonifacio Polinio, Salvador Lascanas Jr., Romeo Yasar, Jordan Salcedo, Abelardo Permangel, Salvador Yabana, Marlon Buanghog, Uldarico Taboranza, Alfredo Arabes, and Danilo Mabuti.

Valencia said that the retrieval of the body of the last missing victim brought the landslide casualties to 14. Valencia disclosed that there were 45 construction workers when the incident happened at the Leyte Geothermal Production Field-Energy Development Corp. (LGPF-EDC) in Kananga, Leyte on the interior boundaries of Ormoc City last March 1. (Restituto Cayubit)
