Manila, Philippines – A progressive lawmaker is asking the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to increase the honoraria of public school teachers from P4,000 to P6,000.
Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) party-list Rep. Antonio Tiñio said the poll body has enough funds to grant the P2,000-increase in the honoraria of around 228,000 public school teachers who are expected to be part of the Boards of Election Inspectors (BEIs) in over 79,000 clustered voting precincts nationwide.
He said the honoraria increase could be sourced out from the additional P4.14 billion recently released by Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to the Comelec.
He lamented that since 2004, the public school teachers have not received an increase in their honorarium even as he expressed serious concern about their safety of teachers following the numerous glitches in the nationwide mock-election recently conducted by Comelec. (Charissa M. Luci)
