PAVIA, Iloilo – With the country on track in attaining rice self-sufficiency this year, the government is now preparing the branding and packaging of premium rice varieties for export, according to President Benigno S. Aquino III.
The President said Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala has assured him that the goal of being self-sufficient in rice by 2013 can be achieved if the weather permits it.
“The last time I talked to Procy, I asked him if we are sure of being self-sufficient in rice by 2013. He said it can be done as long as the weather cooperates. We all know that 20 storms pass by the country. We might be hit by storms during harvest season and that will be hard to deal with,” the President said in Filipino during a campaign rally here last Thursday.
“If the weather cooperates, the only problem we are dealing with now is packaging and branding. Imagine the names that we will put in our rice exports and the style of the packaging,” he added. (Genalyn D. Kabiling)
