DepEd celebrates Oral Health Month

Manila, Philippines – In line with its efforts to promote oral health among schoolchildren to reduce absenteeism and improve school performance, the Department of Education (DepEd) will celebrate the 9th Dental National Health Month through a series of activities for the whole month of February.

Through DepEd Memorandum No. 17, Series of 2013, released to all bureau directors, directors of services, centers, and heads of units, regional directors, schools division/city superintendents, heads of public elementary and secondary schools, Education Secretary Armin Luistro advised all public school dentists to coordinate with Philippine Dental Association (PDA) local chapters on the activities scheduled during the month-long celebration.

“The month-long celebration aims to create awareness on the primary role of the schools in the government’s efforts to promote oral health on its direct link to general health and well-being towards improving learning outcomes and reducing absenteeism,“ Luistro said.

With theme “Ngipin Pangalagaan, Sakit Maiiwasan, Bansa’s Matutulunga Tungo sa Kaunlaran“ the celebration is in line with Presidential Proclamation No. 559 dated February 24, 2004. “All school health and nutrition personnel, especially the school dentists, are expected to take the lead in the conduct of the activities,“ Luistro said. He added that the accomplishments must be submitted to the Health and Nutrition (HNC) on or before March 8. (Ina Hernando Malipot)
