Manila, Philippines – Abigail Maraño atoned from her poor showing in the first two sets to help defending champion La Salle deal Ateneo its first loss in the UAAP Season women’s volleyball tournament with a 26-28, 21-25, 25-13, 25-21, 15-13 victory Saturday at the jampacked Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

With the Lady Eagles turning things around after trailing early 2-7 in the fifth set, Maraño, the reigning MVP, scored two clutch hits for the Lady Archers to take a 12-8 buffer.

Flling in for injured Fille Cainglet, Ella de Jesus connected on a hit and block for Ateneo to
threaten to 13-14.

Michelle Gumabao then ended the two-hour, 19-minute match with a kill which de Jesus failed to receive for La Salle to seal the deal. The Lady Archers tied their victims on top at 6-1, foiling the Lady Eagles bid for a first round sweep.

Earlier, Dindin Santiago and Cai Nepomuceno combined for 30 hits as National University easily disposed University of the Philippines, 25-16, 25-15, 25-18, to move above the .500 mark for the second time this season.

The 6-foot-1 Santiago scored all of her 17 points from spikes while Nepomuceno had a seasonhigh five blocks to lift the Lady Bulldogs to book their fourth win in seven matches and grab the No. 4 slot. NU is holding a half-game lead over Adamson, which is now in fifth place at 3-3.

La Salle sophomores played huge, as Ara Galang finished with 18 hits and 11 digs while Mika Reyes contributed 16 points, including four blocks.

Gumabao and Maraño had 12 and 11 hits, respectively, for the Lady Archers, who are bidding for a ‘three-peat’.

Alyssa Valdez had 23 points, including four service aces and three blocks, while Cainglet added 16 points for Ateneo.

The Lady Maroons slumped to their sixth loss in seven outings to stay in seventh spot.

In men’s play, NU (7-0) completed a first-round sweep with a 25-23, 25-23, 25-22 victory over UP (1-6) with Peter Torres finishing with 15 hits. La Salle improved to (4-3) by defeating Adamson (3-4), 25-14, 25-19, 25-18.
