Aquino appointing Secretary to Cabinet

Manila, Philippines – Malacanang confirmed yesterday that President Benigno S. Aquino III will appoint a Secretary to the Cabinet to ease the burdens of the Office of the Executive Secretary (OES) and the Presidential Management Staff (PMS).

Deputy presidential spokeswoman Abigail Valte said the position is similar to that of Secretary Ping de Jesus during the time of the President’s mother, President Corazon C. Aquino.

Valte noted that at present, the PMS performs the duty of the Secretary to the Cabinet while the OES follows up with Cabinet secretaries on various projects.

She said the new position would ease the burdens of the PMS and the OES, “considering that the PMS is the one who takes care of the leg work, the secretariat work, and all the documents that are presented and are given to the President during Cabinet meetings.”

Reports said that Energy Secretary Jose Rene Almendras will be appointed as Secretary to the Cabinet. However, Valte said there is no advise yet from the OES.

Meanwhile, Malacanang has appointed a new general manager of the Metro Rail Transit Corp. (MRTC), a new executive director of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), and a new administrator of the Office of Transportation Security (OTS).

Transportation and Communications Secretary Manuel “Mar” A. Roxas III said that Aquino appointed Atty. Al S. Vitangcol III as the new MRTC chief, Francisco Mendoza as the new LTFRB executive director, and retired Commodore Roland Recomono as the new OTS administrator. (Madel R. Sabater and Kris Bayos)
