Actors prettier than leading ladies

Manila, Philippines – ‘GATAS’ – The “Maalaala Mo Kaya” episode last Saturday should have been titled “Gatas” and NOT “Singsing.” You see it was a promo for a powdered milk product, with Pokwang playing a social worker who mouthed the benefits of drinking milk. She was even shown drinking milk several times.

The role was dramatic, but Pokwang was not up to it. She’s fine in comic roles but not effective at all in sad scenes.

Gardo Versoza, who played her husband, did much better. Also the young actor who portrayed their rebellious son.

In the first place, why did Charo Santos allow MMK to be an advertising outlet of a milk product? A big disappointment to his faithful MMK follower all these years.

PRETTIER THAN – Still on ABS-CBN drama shows.

Coco Martin is much prettier than “Walang Hanggan” leading lady Julia Montes. Very little chemistry, if any at all.

Susan Roces, Helen Gamboa, Richard Gomez, and Dawn Zulueta stand out in “Walang Hanggan.” And the beautiful scenery, too.

While Enchong Dee is also prettier than “Maria La del Barrio” love interest Erich Gonzales, they have grown into their characters. Effective as lovers torn apart by circumstances.

Arron Villaflor is good as the third man in the love triangle of sorts with Enchong (playing his brother) and Erich. But is it true that offcam Erich and Enchong are cold towards each other?

Jewel Mische is an effective contravida, not an out-and-out one.

Assunta de Rossi and Angel Aquino provide solid support. Ditto Noel Colet. But how the guy has aged.

MY RECYCLE – Nice to hear that Nelia G. Lim is a recycling advocate.

Her calling card says it all: Let’s recycle now! Reduce, Reuse. An advocacy project of Natural Organic Way.

But Nelia says she’s still part of the entertainment world, managing Bloomfield, Nonoy Zuñiga, Juan Rodrigo, and Tiongco Brothers (so they’re still around).

OMD IN MANILA – Nelia’s drumbeating the upcoming concert of the iconic band of the ’80s, Orchestra Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD). It’s performing in Manila on March 12 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Yes, a one-night concert only.

After 33 years, the music of the OMD refuses to fade. Its classic songs are worth hearing and experiencing live. Remember “If You Leave,” “Secret,” “Enola Gay,” “So in Love,” and “Dreaming”?

Tickets are now on sale at Ticketnet outlets. (Ronald Constantino)
