NARVACAN, Ilocos Sur - A New People’s Army (NPA) leader and two other rebels were killed while another one was wounded Friday morning in an encounter with Army troopers at the rebels’ encampment in Sitio Nagas-asan, Ud-udiao, Sallapadan, Abra province.
Col. Eliseo Posadas, commander of the Army’s 503rd Brigade based in Lagangilang, Abra, said that the three slain rebels were identified as Ricardo Reyes alias Tubong, leader of the NPA’s SPP South Central Tahoma operating in the towns of Bucloc, Daguioman, Sallapadan and Boliney in Abra province; one alias Ronnie and one alias Spike.
Posadas said an unidentified rebel was also confirmed wounded during the encounter. According to Posadas, the cadavers of the three dead rebels were not recovered as they were dragged by their escaping comrades.
Local residents identified the slain rebels, Posadas said.
The encounter happened at about 10:30 a.m. last Friday.
The soldiers were conducting security patrol in the area when they discovered the rebels’ encampment. The gunbattle lasted for 30 minutes. (Freddie G. Lazaro)
