Earthquake drill set this morning

Manila, Philippines – All elementary and secondary schools in both public and private will join the simultaneous conduct of the fourth quarter national schoolbased earthquake drill today at 9 a.m. as ordered by the Department of Education (DepEd).

Education Secretary Armin Luistro, through DepEd Order No. 84, Series of 2012, released to all Bureau and Regional Directors, Regional Secretary of Administrative Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), and Heads of public and private elementary and secondary schools, said that the activity is pursuant to Republic Act (RA) No. 10121 that highlights that preparedness and mitigation are key strategies in reducing disaster risk.

“This activity seeks to intensify and level up earthquake preparedness at schools and local communities,“ Luistro said.

The activity is in cooperation with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) and other partners. Luistro added that the activity also aims to generate the highest level of awareness among the public on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) concerns and to assess the capacity level of the school and the community in the eventuality of disasters and emergencies.

“All public and private schools are enjoined to participate in the said drill and are enjoined to integrate challenging activities during the drill such as tsunami evacuation, fire after the earthquake, blockage of identified evacuation route which will be specific to the school situation,“ Luistro stressed.
