Manila, Philippines – Police killed yesterday morning five members of a Cordillera-based carnapping syndicate, one of them is a woman, after a brief clash in Gerona town in Tarlac, a police official said yesterday.
Supt. Ponciano Zafra, chief of the Gerona Municipal Police Station, said the slain suspects turned out to have also killed a 67-year old owner of the vehicle they stole in Baguio City.
“We are now conducting background check to identify all of them,” said Zafra.
But the initial assessment, according to him, revealed that all the slain suspects are natives of Kalinga.
The official said the operation stemmed from alert call regarding the carnapping of a Toyota Innova (NDO-933) in Baguio City on Saturday night.
The car was then driven by Roldan Ymzon, whose cadaver was recovered at around 8 a.m. on Sunday in Pangasinan.
Zafra said the location of the five suspected carnap men was tracked down after they received reports about some men forcing their way inside a farm in Barangay Danzo in Gerona town.
“We sent a team of policemen in the area to check but instead of yielding, the suspects opened fire at the police, triggering a brief exchange of gunfire,” said Zafra.
Recovered from the slain suspects were two .45-caliber pistols, two .38-caliber revolvers and an MKII fragmentation grenade that one of the slain suspects attempted to detonate. (Aaron Recuenco)
